Clearly the 1″ sensor in the Nikon V1 is not nearly as bad, as some people may lead you to believe.

    Hi Ivan,
i am also very happy with the HIGH-ISO Behavior of my V1.
The nature of noise is nicer than from my D90. My D700 beats them both of course. But the best cam is the one you have with you. The DSLRs stay home mostly, the V1 is a great always-on cam.
    I love it!

Hi Mario, thanks for taking the time to visit my blog and leave a comment!
I’ve used analogue cameras for many years, so I’m not a stranger to film. I feel confident in saying that the noise the small 1″ sensor in the V1 produces resembles film grain like no other sensor in any camera I’ve used so far. I find the output at ISO1600 to be really nice in a “raw” kind of way. As I’ve said in another blog post, ISO3200 is more situational. Pictures either look good or they are falling apart. Margin for error is rather thin. You have to err on the side of overexposure. Which doesn’t seem to be a problem for me. Similar to print film, the 1″ sensor seems to handle overexposure much better than underexposure. Of course, within reason. You won’t be salvaging any photo overexposed by 3 stops. But that won’t be happening with digital anytime soon.
And you are right, the best cam is the one that is more likely to be going places with you. And I find that the V1 is rather easy to take with. It is small, but not too small, fast as lightning and never leaves you waiting. D700 is a totally different beast, but I bet it would, if I had one, be staying at home and collecting dust, most of the time. So no comparison.
The more I use the V1, the more I like it. For the current asking price, it is a steal!
